The No. 1 Tip To Land Your Dream Job

The No. 1 Tip To Land Your Dream Job

What is the secret to successfully landing your dream job?

Job interviews are taxing. There’s a lot of noise when it comes to top job interview tips. What works for some may not work for others. That is why it’s best to forget all that you have read about prepping for a job interview. There’s only one thing you need to excel at in order to land your dream job.

Be a marketer.

You are the product that you must sell. Learning to market yourself is not a sprint. Rather, it is a marathon throughout your career. The way you position yourself as a candidate will change depending on your audience. Every. Single. Time. No matter your industry or seniority level, you need to get into the mindset of your audience and determine the optimal way to communicate your value to your audience.

Once you have established the mindset of your audience, you can begin to extract the parts of your candidacy and experience that would pique the interest of and demand the attention from your audience in order to retain their interest.

You can market yourself as the perfect fit for the role by:

Using the same language used in the job description but tailoring it to discuss your work experiences. Doing so will draw distinct parallels between you and the candidate they need to hire.

Don’t be afraid to manipulate the conversation. Speak with conviction in a respectful, authoritative manner. It is imperative that you answer the question being asked to you, but to steer the end of your answer into a talking point that you wanted to highlight in the first place.

Prepare relevant anecdotes that will sound like spontaneous behavioral examples but, in fact, demonstrate that you have done this exact type of work previously and are equipped to fulfill the duties of this role from Day One.

Convey a genuine and communicative nature so your words will resonate with the hiring manager. If you fail to connect with the hiring manager, chances of getting the job are slim to none. Do your homework on the hiring manager ahead of time to plan ways to incorporate subtle commonalities between you and them during the interview.

Avoid rambling at all costs. Your answers should be pithy, compelling, and succinct. Imagine your answers as a gymnast’s floor routine. There is a run-up, followed by impressive tricks, followed by the most critical element, which is sticking the landing. When you begin your answer, fill as much power in it as possible, and land your answer cleanly. Whatever you end with, make it seem on purpose and feign confidence even if you are not.

Don’t forget to be personable and likable. People want to find out who you are. Make sure to portray confidence vs. cockiness. They don’t want to work with an ego. Position yourself as a competent candidate who is also down to earth and easy to work with.

Lastly, give them the impression that this is EXACTLY what you have experience doing. Remember, your job is to sell yourself as the right candidate. They can already read. Your resume is handy if they need to refer to it. Your primary job is to bring your experience to life and sell your candidacy during the interview in order to land your dream job.
